Abstract

580,652. Tubular heat-exchange elements; cooling radiators for aircraft. WORCESTER WINDSHIELDS & CASEMENTS, Ltd., SOUTHALL, H., and DEAKIN, T. M. May 11, 1944, Nos. 8982/44 and 114.74/45. [Class 64 (iii)] [Also in Group XXII] A matrix for heat-exchangers is formed of flat tubes 1, 6, Fig. 1, bonded. together by soldering, brazing &c. The ends of the tubes 1 may be of circular cross-section. Fig. 5 shows the matrix embodied in an oil cooler for an aircraft engine, the tubes 1 being secured in tube-plates 4, 5 and divided into sections by recesses 10, 14 in the plates so that the oil may flow in a serpentine course from an inlet 12 in the cover 11 to an outlet 13. Cold air flows through the open-ended tubes 6 from the left to the right of the cooler. In assembling the cooler, the tubes 1 are first secured to one another and to the tube-plates by solder of a relatively high fusing point, and then the tubes 6 are inserted between the tubes 1 and secured thereto and to one another by solder of a lower fusing point. During the latter operation, the tubes 1 may be expanded by oil pressure to make good contact with the tubes 6.
