Abstract
577,165. Galvanic batteries. MOORE, H. R. G., and GOLLOP, H. June 21, 1930, No. 19001. [Class 53] [Also in Group XXI] A battery for firing mines &c. in the sea and activated by the sea water is arranged so that the sea can enter the battery only when current is required. Fig. 1 shows a part of a battery comprising an outer casing divided by partitions p into a number of compartments each containing positive and negative electrodes of plate form. The positive electrodes consist of silver gauze or silver-plated copper or other metal gauze which is impregnated with silver chloride applied in the molten state. The negative electrodes are of zinc or magnesium or a magnesium alloy. The electrodes are separated by sheets of corrugated and perforated celluloid and holes are provided in the casing for the entry of sea water. In cases where the battery is to yield a single instantaneous firing current the partitions p may be dispensed with. Fig. 3 shows a portion of a mine in which the battery is housed in a compartment f sealed by a lead or other metal diaphragm d which may be backed by a rigid perforated plate e. Attached to the diaphragm d is a rigid rod c which when forcibly deflected tears away the diaphragm and allows sea water to enter the compartment f and activate the battery. Fig. 6 shows a safety circuit for cutting out a battery when the mine horn has been damaged in laying or in the case of a horn being defective. The battery is at first short-circuited through a line i. and fuse k until the mooring switch h operates to close the detonator circuit l and open the line i. Alternatively a separate detonator with blowing charge may be employed to sink a damaged mine. In another arrangement a mooring rope safety switch may be employed which will maintain the mine safe for a sufficient time to allow any accidentally flooded battery to become exhausted by discharge through a low resistance safety circuit.
