Abstract

In the production of rubbery materials by modifying low molecular weight linear polyesters or polyester amides by heating them with diisocyanates, e.g. as described in Specification 553,733, the polyesters are melted and mixed with the diisocyanates at temperatures below which thickening occurs, i.e. below 90 DEG C., and the mixture is then heated without further stirring to temperatures above 100 DEG C. until tough rubbery products are obtained. The polyesters or polyester amides may be obtained by heating the reactants at polymerizing temperatures with elimination of water, e.g. by adding an entrainer, e.g. xylene, and distilling off the azeotropic mixture of entrainer and water. In examples: (1) a low molecular weight polyester amide is formed by heating 127 parts adipic acid, 42 parts ethylene glycol, and 13 parts monoethanolamine to 190 DEG C. for 17 hours in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, the mixture being subjected to azeotropic distillation with xylene for 22 hours; the syrup obtained is heated to 70 DEG C. in a mixer and 4 parts hexamethylene diisocyanate added with stirring and the mixture is poured on to a tray which is heated in an oven at 100 DEG C.; (2) a polyester is obtained by heating adipic acid, maleic anhydride and ethylene glycol in an atmosphere of nitrogen; and the product is mixed with hexamethylene diisocyanate under similar conditions as in (1). Solvents, plasticisers-tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, butylphthalyl butyl glycollate, fillers-carbon black, clay mica, asbestos, whiting, modifying agents-cellulose acetate, nitrate, ethers, casein, zein, soya protein, polyvinyl alcohol may be added.
