Abstract

573,956. Folding wheels. GENERAL AIRCRAFT Ltd., and LEATHER, G. B. Feb. 10, 1943, No. 2258. [Class 144 (i)] A wheel which can be folded to facilitate transport comprises pivotally-connected arcuate rim sections 1 connected to the hub by spokes which may be locked to maintain the sections in the form of a rigid circular rim, or released to allow the assembly to be collapsed by elongation in. one direction and contraction in the other, as indicated in chain lines. In the form shown, the spokes, which are pivoted at their outer ends on the pivots 3 which connect the rim sections, comprise one spoke 5 rigidly connected to the hub, a second spoke diametrically opposite to it formed of telescoping outer and inner members 6, 6a of which the first is rigidly connected to the hub and the second pivoted to the rim, and a pair of spokes 8, 9 perpendicular to the first and detachably connected to sockets 7 on the hub by transverse pins 11 which enter slots 10. The spokes 8, 9 are locked in the sockets 7 by means of springs which engage in grooves in the ends of pins 12 secured to the spokes and extending through the walls of the sockets. In a modification, the spokes are formed with T heads to the ends of which the rim sections are separately pivoted, and the spokes 8, 9 are replaced by spokes pivoted to the hub and formed of two parts hinged together, 'so that they may fold when the wheel is collapsed. Spring catches prevent the spokes from folding when they are extended.
