[Class 106 (ii)] A linear-dimension gauge comprises a measuring anvil 2 with an inclined face 32 in contact with a like inclined face 31 of a slide 6 moved rectilinearly by a screw 10. The screw is held against longitudinal movement by stops 11, 14 and engages with nuts 27, 28 having a pushfit into the slide, which is guided by ribs 7 and spring- pressed bars 8. The manipulative end of the screw carries a chambered knob 16 enclosing a pair of collars 17, 18 and spring- loaded nuts 19, 20. The collar 17 is fixed to the spindle 10 and is formed with teeth engaged by teeth on the collar 18 which is secured to the knob 16, the pressure being adjusted by the spring 21 and nuts 19, 20. A scale 23, adjustably secured to the spindle 10, indicates the angular position of the spindle, while an indicator secured to the slide projects from the casing to indicate on a scale 46, Fig. 1 (not shown), graduated in terms of the linear movement of the anvil 2. The anvil 3 is formed on a rod 40 bored at its end for the reception of a spring-controlled plunger 44. The initial setting of the anvils 2, 3 is obtained by the insertion of precision slip gauges of standard length, the plunger 44 being pressed inwards to adjust the rod 40 which is then clamped in position by the screw 42.
