Abstract
561,820. Accumulators. NIFE 13ATTERIES, Ltd., LEVIN, A., and THOMSON, W. S. Jan. 30, 1943, No. 1610. [Class 531 An alkaline or other accumulator comprises a pair of cupped sheetmetal body parts a, b, a layer of active material e, f in each part, and means for uniting the parts, either integral with one of the parts as in Fig. 1, or consisting of a separate shell k as shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 1 the part b is arranged within the part a and is spaced therefrom by a ring c of soft rubber which is compressed to seal the cell when the free edge of part a is turned inwards as at a<1> to retain the part b in position. The part b may be formed with a hollow boss d serving as a contact to engage the flat part a of an adjacent cell. In Fig. 2 both parts a and b are similar in shape and are each formed with a boss d, a separate shell k being turned over as at m, n to press the parts a, b against a separating and sealing ring c. In Fig. 3 the boss d has a hole o closed by a disc p of soft rubber through which a hollow syringe needle can be inserted to replenish the electrolyte, the perforation r so formed serving as a vent for the escape of gas. Fig. 4 shows two cells, the part a of the upper cell being. formed with a shallow cylindrical socket u engaged by a spigot v secured to the part b of the lower cell. A number of cells may be connected in series in a tubular holder, which may be threaded internally to receive the threaded part a of each cell, or the units may be connected by welding or by screw and nut. The active materials may be nickel hydroxide in part a and cadmium or iron oxide in part b, which may be in powder in a thin perforated envelope, or may be in disc form, or of porous metal loaded with active material by electro-deposition &c., or the active material may be electro-deposited directly on the parts a, b.
