Abstract
547,853. Dyes. HADDOCK, N. H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 12, 1941, No. 3361. [Class 2 (iii)] Perylene derivatives. Thiocyano and xanthic ester derivatives of perylene-3:4:9:10-tetracarboxy-di-(phenylimide) are obtained by treating with thiocyanates or xanthates tetrazotized perylene-3:4:9:10-tetracarboxy-di-(m- or paminophenylimides) (cf. Specification 201,786, [Class 2 (iii)]), in which the phenylene nuclei may carry alkyl or alkoxy groups containing not more than 4 carbon atoms. The products are hydrolyzed by sodium sulphide to the corresponding mercaptans and are applicable for dyeing cotton, from a sodium sulphide vat, bright red shades, specially fast to light, chemick and boiling soap solution. The disulphides obtainable by oxidation of the mercaptans, e.g. with air or with sodium m-nitrobenzenesulphonate, are similarly applicable. In examples, (1) perylene-3:4:9:10- tetracarboxy - di - (m - aminophenylimide) is tetrazotized with sodium nitrite and sulphuric acid and the resulting diazonium sulphate is treated with an aqueous solution of sodium thiocyanate and warmed to 95‹C.; (2) the corresponding di-(p-aminophenylimide) is simiarly treated; (3) the diazonium sulphate of (1) is treated with an aqueous solution of potassium ethyl xanthate or the corresponding isopropyl or n-butyl esters and warmed to 50‹C. with addition of sodium carbonate ; (4) perylene- 3:4:9:10 - tetracarboxy - di - (m - amino - p - methylphenylimide) is tetrazotized with sodium nitrite and sulphuric acid and the solution is treated with an aqueous solution of sodium thiocyanate and slowly heated to boiling ; (5) perylene - 3:4:9:10 - tetracarboxy - di - (m - amino - p - methoxyphenylimide) is similarly converted into the di-(m-thiocyano) derivative ; (6) perylene - 3:4:9:10 - tetracarboxy - di - (m - aminophenylimide) is tetrazotized with sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid and the solution is treated with an aqueous solution at 60-80‹C. containing potassium isopropyl xanthate and sodium carbonate.
