Abstract
544,777. Seaming. RANKIN, F. W., and PRIESTLEY, J. W. Oct. 23, 1940, No. 15610. [Class 83 (iv)] A seaming-machine, having a rotary head 8 carrying a chuck 11b and seaming elements 11d actuated during the rotation of the head, is provided with means for arresting the element-actuating means without stopping the head, when a a seam is complete. An unseamed can is placed on a table 24 and a pedal 42 is pressed down. This pedal acts through linkwork 41, 37, 36, 34, a collar 28 and a spring 30. to lift the can and clamp it against the chuck 11b which with the head 8 is rotated continuously by bevel gearing 14, 16 and a pulley 3. The lever 37 also acts through a link 44, lever 45, and collar 54, Fig. 2, to lift lock pins 58, carried by the cams 10, 11, which actuate the seaming rollers 11d, from engagement with the head 8. The lever 45 acts, at the same time, through a pin 50, lever 47, and collar 22, to close a clutch 19 and thus act through the bevel gears 15, 13 to drive the cams 10, 11 at a speed somewhat slower than the head 8. This causes the actuation of first and second seaming rollers and, when the cams have made one revolution relative to the head, cam projections 52 on the gear 14 engage pins 53 and force them and the collar 54 down, thus engaging the pins. 58 in the recesses 60 in the head and arresting the relative rotation. The pins 58 also move the collar 54 down thus bring a pedal 42 and the mechanism actuated thereby into its original position. The invention may be applied to cans of any cross-section.
