Abstract

541,357. Glycerol. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Feb. 23, 1940, No. 3436. Convention date, Feb. 24, 1939. [Class 2 (iii)] Glycerol is obtained by hydrolysis of a #- alkyl ether with an aqueous hydrolysis catalyst such as sulphuric, phosphoric, hydrochloric, hydrobromic or hydriodic acid. At atmospheric pressure a halogen acid should be used in at least equivalent quantity so that an alkyl halide is formed ; at higher pressure, such as 5-1000 atmospheres a small quantity of acid is sufficient, glycerol and an alcohol being formed. Examples describe the hydrolysis of the #-methyl ether with hydrochloric, hydrobromic and hydriodic acid, both methods being exemplified. In one example the hydrochloric acid and is used with additions of ferric chloride and hydriodic acid and in another with tetramethylammonium chloride. The initial ethers may be made by hydrogenation of alkyl ethers of alkyl glycerates as described in Specification 541,360.
