Abstract

536,098. Facsimile telegraphy. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., (Deakin, G.). Oct. 31, 1939, No. 29052. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group XVIII] In an automatic facsimile transmitter of known type a message receiving slot is provided the width of which can be selectively adjusted to receive message blanks of different widths. The selection may be effected by manually operated keys electrically controlling from a remote point, or by coin operation. Fig. 1 shows a cabinet 10 fitted with a blank-receiving shoot 11 divided into two portions by a partition 19. Each portion is closed at the top by a pivoted cover 14, 15 opened by coins inserted into coin shoots 18a, 18b, 18c, 18d. It is assumed that coins inserted in the first three shoots will cause cover 14 to open, and a coin placed in shoot 18d will open both covers 14 and 15 and remove partition 19, thus allowing insertion of a blank of full width. Fig. 2 shows the mechanism as applied to shoot 18c, the inserted coin 25c resting on a pivoted finger 20 held up by a spring 22. The cover 14 has a rear extension 24 furnished with a catch underneath and held by a spring-retracted pawl 28 to keep the cover closed. A foot 29 closes a switch e<SP>1</SP> in the circuit of an electromagnet X<SP>1</SP> which, when energised, attracts the finger 20 and causes the pawl 28 to be thrown back and the extension 24 to be lifted till a projection 25 thereon is caught by a pawl 26 which thus holds the cover open. The switch e<SP>1</SP> is at the same time opened. The inserted coin first prepares the circuit by pressing on a switch c<SP>1</SP> and current passes when handle 17 is turned to make contact at 17a through to earth. When the coin 25c passes to the magazine, or is refunded by operating a lever RF, the circuit is broken and the finger 20 rises again. The pawl 26 has a bellcrank armature attracted by a re-set magnet Y1 which also closes the coin shoot when a coin has been inserted by raising a lever 27. The shoot 11 has a spring- and magnet-controlled bottom stop on which the inserted blank rests and a horizontally moving knife, spring- and magnetcontrolled, passes through slots across the top of the shoot 11 to cut off any excess area of the blank.
