Abstract

527,927. Hand wheels. SMITH, G. W. April 18, 1939, No. 11692. [Class 80 (iv)] [Also in Group XXV] Consists in an auxiliary steering wheel provided with means for readily detachably securing it to the normal steering wheel of a vehicle. The rim 1 of the auxiliary wheel is connected by three radial arms 2 to a concentric flat ring 3 which carries a number, three or four, of angularly adjustable clamping devices for clamping to the arms 5 of the normal wheel 6. Each clamping device consists of a cylindrical member 7 having a depending lug 8 which carries on hinges 9 two arms 10 the lower ends of which are hooked. The arms can be closed against the action of a spring 14 by a fly-nut 13 on a bolt 12. The member 7 is gripped between arcuate faces 16 of the two members 17 which form a split clip having an aperture 18 which accommodates the ring 3. A bolt 20 passes through the members 7, 17. By tightening the nut 22 the member 7 is forced against the ring 3. Alternatively, the ring 3 may be slotted to receive bolts from the blocks bearing against the ring. The clamping devices can be carried by the rim of the auxiliary wheel.
