Abstract

527,052. Electric vehicles; frames. ASSOCIATED ELECTRIC VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS, Ltd., and JONES, C. E. March 30, 1939, No. 9932. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (iv)] In order to increase the space available for carrying the batteries of an electric vehicle the central parts 9 of the frame longitudinals 5 are inwardly bent towards each other so to increase the space available on their outward sides without increasing the width of the vehicle. In the construction shown the frame members 5 are straight in side elevation and their parallel end parts 8 and central parts 9 are connected by inclined parts 10. The battery boxes 16 are carried by transverse channel members 11, 12 secured to the frame members 5 by angles 24 and braced by gusset plates 15. The rear gusset plates may be replaced by longitudinal stays 27 connected to the rear spring brackets 26. The battery boxes are provided with angle irons 17 which rest on the channels 11, 12, end and side movements of the boxes being prevented by lugs 19, 20 on the members 17 and 11, 12 respectively. Straps 18 are secured to the angles 17 and pass underneath the boxes. When the boxes are to be removed they are lifted by a battery truck until the angles 17 clear the lugs 20, after which they can be wheeled away. In a modification the angles 17 are connected together by channel members at both sides of each box, the straps 18 being connected either to the angles or the channels. The motor 14 is supported by one of the transverse frame members 13.
