Abstract

504,915. Two-part couplings; binding-posts; supporting conductors; clamps; fencing. WALLIS, D., and GRUBB, S. E. July 31, 1937, No. 21305. [Classes 36 and 38 (i)] [Also in Groups I and XXV] A gripping device for connecting wires electrically or mechanically comprises a block or plate 1 having a recess therein of wedge shape to receive a corresponding wedge 2 pressed by a spring 3 and guided by a pin-and-slot 6, 7 so as to hold the end of the wire or cable between parallel surfaces 8, 9 that may be grooved to fit the wire or serrated to grip it. A simple terminal as shown in Fig. 3 may be fitted to a fuse base, switch, &c. For multiple connections to a bus-bar, Fig. 5 (not shown), or in a distribution box, Figs. 9 and 10, plates having recesses of wedge shape cut therein house the clamping wedges which are retained by superposed plates. In the distribution box, insulating discs 15 carry metal plates 16 having recesses 17 for the wedges 18 that are pressed forward by springs 19. Several such plates are suparpossd within a housing 20 and serve to connect together several cables or to connect such cables to a plug member 21 the contacts of which enter holes in the plates 16 which are plain or bushed with insulation to produce the desired electrical connections. The cables whose ends are held by the wedges 18 are anchored by a slit resilient plate 22 secured within the housing 20 and engaging the cable sheathing which, if of lead, is thus earthed 'to the housing. For holding a wire et a point intermediate of its ends a block 1, Fig. 13, having a through passage 5x is employed, and may be fixed to a fencing post by lugs 25, the wedge 2 allowing the wire to be tightened but preventing reverse movement thereof. If movement in both directions is to be prevented, a pair of wedges arranged back to back in a block with a spring between them both grip the wire, the block having a lateral opening for insertion of the wire.
