Abstract

493,202. Counting-apparatus. KENT, Ltd., G., FLORY, H. G., and COLEY, S. G. April 7, 1937, No. 9904. [Class 106 (i)] In a fluid flow meter the counting mechanism is actuated by the flow responsive part through a variable velocity transmission device consisting of a plurality of one-way clutch devices and including a member responsive to temperature change to vary the velocity ratio. The invention is shown applied to a known type of meter with a piston movable in a working chamber to transmit movement to a spindle 8 associated with a variable-speed gearing to actuate a counter supported in an extension 10 of the meter casing. The variable-speed gearing is similar to that described in Specification 389,836, [Group XXIV], and comprises a cylindrical cage 24, Figs. 2 and 3, mounted on a spindle 25 and housing two one-way drive clutches formed by discs 20 and balls 26. Each disc carries a pin, the pin 21 on the lower disc extends into a slot 14<1> of a pivoted lever 14 while the pin 22 on the upper disc passes freely through a slot 23 in the lower disc and extends into a slot on the opposite side of the lever 14. The lever 14 is secured to a spindle 13 adapted to be driven by a reduction gearing 9 from the spindle 8. The spindle 13 is carried by one arm of a spring-controlled bell-crank lever 15. The other arm of the lever 15 bears on an adjusting screw 18 mounted on the free end of a bi-metallic strip 11 located in the path of flow. Movement of the strip 11 due to temperature variation varies the eccentricity of the spindle 13 with respect to the spindle 25 so that the driven discs rotate with cyclical varying speeds.
