[Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] An engine 59, Fig. 2, having a variable-speed ratchet gear combined inside its crankcase, is arranged transversely of a vehicle, and universal-joint members P, Q, at the ends of its variably driven shaft (which includes differential gearing), are connected directly to the front driving wheels through half-axle or cardan shafts, as shown. in plan view. The engine shown is a horizontally-opposed eight-cylinder one. V-eight, V-four, eight-in-line or fourin-line engines may alternatively be used. The engine crank-shaft may be arranged above the variably driven shaft but, for a commercial vehicle, is preferably arranged in front of it, so that the centre of gravity of the engine is forward of the front-axle. The rear wheels may also be driven by bevel gearing from the shaft-ends P, Q or the engine may be arranged longitudinally, the joint-members P, Q being connected to front- and rear-axle driving shafts. As shown in Fig. 4, the driven shaft of the ratchet gear may be formed as a hollow sleeve 9 including the planet-carrier 61 of a differ- . ential gear the sun wheels of which are secured to internal shafts 62,63 carrying the universaljoint members P, Q.
