Abstract

490,004. Moulding confectionery. HENKEL, A. A. Feb. 1, 1937, No. 2926. [Class 87 (ii)] Filled confections are produced by forming and feeding lengthwise a tube of sugar and intermittently delivering a plastic or fluid filling into the tube to produce over-filled and slack-filled sections alternately, the overfilled sections being then worked down or allowed to contract. The filled tube is then cut into pieces and stamped in dies. The sugar &c. is moulded on the surface of a tube 8 by means of conical rollers of known type and is moved endwise by rollers 27. The filling material, such as sugar syrup or jam, is fed from a hopper 1 through a grille 2 into the cylinder 5 of a piston pump. The piston 4 acts as a valve to the base of the hopper and forces the filling through a valve 6 into the tube 8 forming nodes 26 in the sugar tube. The piston passes through packing rings 13 to which water is supplied from tank 14 to wash away sugar crystals. The pump is driven by a crank 18, bell-crank lever 20, and link 21. The pivot 22 of the lever 20 is mounted on a lever 24 whose position can be adjusted to vary the distance by which the piston 4 travels into the cylinder 5 and thus vary the supply of filling. A diaphragm pump may be used instead of a piston pump. Further rollers such as the rollers 27 may be provided to roll down the nodes 26.
