Abstract
Fatty oil is freed from phosphatides and mucilaginous and other matters so as to produce oil which does not break on heating to 600 DEG F. or higher, by (1) intimately mixing with water and promptly centrifuging so that the total time of contact of oil with water is less than 15 minutes; or (2) removing mucilaginous and other matter with water-preferably as in (1)-and then mixing with caustic alkali, salts with a basic reaction, or neutral salts, in amount less than equivalent to the fatty acid content of the oil, and centrifuging or otherwise separating the oil. The treatment is preferably continuous, the mixing with water being effected below 100 DEG F. and the mixture then heated to 100-160 DEG F.; the water may contain starch, salt, acid, or alkali. Suitable proportions of alkali and salts for the second step are 0,05-0,15 per cent of sodium hydroxide, and 0,1-0,3 per cent of alkali phosphates, borates, silicates, and chlorides. Specified fatty oils are linseed, cottonseed, and soya bean. In examples: (1) cottonseed oil and water in the ratio 98 : 2 are flowed through a mixer at 90 DEG F., a heater in which the temperature is raised to 131 DEG F., and a centrifugal separator, in 7 minutes; (2) soya bean oil is mixed cold with 1,5 per cent of water for 5 mins., heated to 131 DEG F. and centrifuged; it is then agitated cold with 1,0 per cent of a 10 per cent solution in water of trisodium phosphate, heated to 185 DEG F., and centrifuged.
