Abstract

A stranded strengthening component and a conducting component laid up there-around to form an overhead electric conductor, are each coated with the same metal or alloy, such as zinc, tin, lead, chromium or nickel, or with different metals or alloys having only a small electrochemical potential between them, such as tin and lead or zinc and cadmium, by spraying, cementation, electrolytic deposition or by the hot-dip process. The strengthening component may be of steel and the conducting component of copper, aluminium or other highly conductive metal or alloy. For example, the individual strands of a steel strengthening component are galvanized by the hot dip process and strands of a copper-cadmium alloy forming the conducting component ale coated with cadmium by electrolytic deposition.
