422,188. Convertible aeroplane and motor road vehicles. NYSTROM, S., Stjarnorp, Link÷ping, Sweden. April 8, 1933, Nos. 10545/33, 911/34, and 912/34. [Class 4] In a convertible aeroplane and motor road vehicle comprising a fuselage or car body 10 mounted upon front and rear land and road wheels 11 and provided with a propeller 12, tail planes 13 and rudder 14, and with mainplanes 19 mounted to turn from the normal transverse position into a longitudinal folded position, and having one or more propelling- motors arranged to drive the propeller or vehicle, the main planes are mounted so as to turn into a folded position in which they are superposed over the car body. As shown, one wing 19 has a rising or spring-lifted pivot pin 22 turning in a rotatable brush 23 adapted to be raised by a spring 24<a>, and which forms the pivot pin for the other wing. In order to facilitate adjustment of the angle of incidence of the wings the pivots are housed in a socket 25 which may be rocked by a handle 27 through ratchet and pawl mechanism. The wings in their extended position are rigidly secured to the car body by conical headed pins 29 on the body 10 which co-operate with spring catches 32. Launching and landing wheels 33 are carried at the lower ends of bars 34 adapted to be raised or lowered in guides 35, which may be fixed to the windscreen pillars on the body 10 by means e.g. of a rack and pinion gear 36. Two engines may be provided one for driving the propeller and the other for driving the road wheels and a coupling may be provided to facilitate driving the propeller from the latter engine. The aeroplane engine may be supported between spring pressed buffers 40 which are locked by pins or screws 40<a>, when the vehicle is being used as an aeroplane. To facilitate stowage, the end portions 41 of the wings can be telescoped by means of screw-and-nut mechanism 45 into the portion 44 of the wings, the spars 43 of which are formed as box girders to receive spars 42 of the wing portion 41. The portion 44 comprises frames 48, 50, connected by the spars 43 and a further frame 49 connected to the frame 50 by spars 51 arranged around the periphery of the frames 49, 50 ; further frames 52 may be provided. 422,188.
