Abstract

419,895. Dropping torpedoes from aircraft. BLACKBURN AEROPLANE & MOTOR CO., Ltd., Seaplane Base, and PETTY, G. E., Pantiles, both in Brough, near Hull. Aug. 2, 1933, No. 21691. [Class 9 (ii).] An apparatus for suspending a torpedo beneath an aircraft comprises, in addition to the usual sling or slings 20 about the middle of the torpedo and the customary fore and aft steadying members 23 on either side of the torpedo, a wedge-shaped structure 10 extending in a fore and aft direction with its forwardly diverging lower and upper sides resting respectively against the upper surface of the torpedo 12 and the under surface of the aircraft 11, which structure is narrow in a direction transverse to the line of flight and carries substantially within its own contour the stop plate for preventing fore and aft movement of the torpedo and the mechanism for actuating the controls of the torpedo. The structure comprises a framework 13, 14, 15 closed by sheet metal, and provided with a stream-lined nose 17. The controls are arranged one behind the other. The dropping gear 27 is operated by a cable 28. The depth control 29 is as described in Specification 164,201, [Class 9 (ii)]. The gyroscope control comprises a cable 31 extending at the rear of the structure.
