Abstract
413,894. Television &c. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Electra House, Victoria Embankment, London. -(Radio Corporation of America; 30, Rockefeller Plaza, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 13, 1933, No. 25374. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v).] In a stereoscopic television system which may employ cathode-ray apparatus both for transmission and for reception, lines belonging to the right-eye and left-eye pictures are scanned alternately at the transmitter. At the receiver both sets of lines are reproduced on the same screen 77, Fig. 1, and are viewed through a grating 97. Stereoscopic transmission. Two cathode-ray tubes 1, 3, Fig. 3, one for each eye, may be used for transmission as described below. The oscillator 9 operates at line-scanning frequency to render the tubes 1, 3, operative alternately. Valves 13, 15 are so biassed that they are alternately blocked by the oscillations. They are resistance-coupled to a further pair of valves 23, 25, whose outputs are used to bias the control grids 33, 37, of the tubes 1, 3, so as to bring them alternately above and below cutoff ; the tubes therefore scan successive lines. Cathode-ray transmitter. Each of the tubes 1, 3, Fig. 3, is constructed as shown in Fig. 9. A cathode beam scans the photoelectric surface 47 under the influence of a pair of coils 43 and a pair of plates 45 ; and the variation of the electron current is applied through resistance 55 to a line or wireless transmitter. This variation is produced by projecting an image of the object 49 on to the photoelectric surface 47, so that the space charge above each element of the surface depends on the brightness of that element. Alternatively (Fig. 8, not shown) two mirrors, one representing each eye, may reflect light from the object through two Nipkow spirals of apertures. In a modification the two cathode-ray tubes may be replaced by one tube having a light sensitive surface 47 on each half of which an image is formed, the two sensitized halves being separated by a non-sensitized strip to permit of the interpolation of a synchronizing-signal, (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). Stereoscopic reception. A cathode-ray receiver, (Fig. 10, not shown), synchronized as described in Specification 407,409 and arranged in a cabinet having a mirror lid as described in Specification 377,622 and a sound-receiver. Its anode may comprise a metallic deposit on the inside of the tube (Fig. 10, not shown). The scanning-lines for left-eye and right-eye are traced alternately and viewed through a grating (97, Fig. 1, not shown) so that only one of the eyes, R or L, sees each set of lines. Specification 395,499 also is referred to.
