Abstract

Fertilizers are produced by treating superphosphates with concentrated gas liquor in the presence of sulphuric acid in a free state or partly free and partly combined with ammonia of the gas liquor, the proportions of sulphuric acid and of the gas liquor being such that the end product consists substantially of a mixture of calcium superphosphate and neutral ammonium sulphate. The gas liquor is preferably free from cyanogen compounds which are liable to impart an undesirable colouration in the product. The process may be carried out by reacting phosphate rock with sulphuric acid in excess of the quantity required for the production of calcium superphosphate and neutralizing the excess sulphuric acid, before it is able to react with the mono-calcium phosphate formed, with concentrated gas liquor. Alternatively the excess sulphuric acid may be neutralized with an ammoniated solution of ammonium sulphate obtained from concentrated gas liquor and sulphuric acid; methods of obtaining such solutions are described.ALSO:Fertilizers are produced by treating superphosphates with concentrated gas liquor in the presence of sulphuric acid in a free state or partly free and partly combined with ammonia of the gas liquor, the proportions of sulphuric acid and of the gas liquor being such that the end product consists substantially of a mixture of calcium superphosphate and neutral ammonium sulphate.
