[Class 82 (ii).] A continuous current of water and the granular or powdered material to be washed is directed first in a downward direction and then deflected so that it continues in an upward direction, and gas under pressure, e.g. compressed air, is directed upwardly into both the downward and upward currents, the gas supply being located so that the gas maintains the light particles in suspension during the deflection of the current while the heavier particles are eliminated. A continuous current of water and the products to be washed is directed downwardly from a pipe 2<a> into a compartment 2<d> of a vessel 2b which is divided by a partition 2<c> into two compartments 2<d>, 2<f> communicating at the bottom. The descending current in the compartment 2d is acted on by a current of compressed air from the nozzle 2<g> and the current is then deflected under the partition 2<c> and flows upwardly in the compartment 2b where it is acted on by compressed air from a nozzle 2". During the deflection, the heavier particles fall out of the current and are discharged through the duct 2<m>. Upper and lower gratings 2<q> and 2<q2> are arranged in the compartments to equalize the flow of the pulp and the gas. Oil may be supplied to the compartment 2d, for example through the spray 2<r>, to form an emulsion of some or all of the lighter particles which rises and flows over the top of the partition 2<c> to the overflow 2<p>.
