Abstract

405,634. Jet propulsion for ships. CAMPINI, S., 3, Viale Corsica, Milan, Italy. July 30, 1932, No. 21581. [Class 114.] In jet propulsion plant for ships the inlet orifice is of narrow elongated form extending substantially along the girth of the under-water surface and opening forwardly to coincide with direction of flow of the layer of water adjacent the skin. The inlet conduit 3, Fig. 4, is directed at 1 parallel with the skin 15, but has a section 10 of the wall pivoted at 11 so that when starting the opening can be enlarged or when reversing the section may be moved up to close the opening. The inlet is protected by gratings 14, a number of which are provided to break the flow into parallel entries across the whole width of the inlet 3. When starting from rest, a supplementary inlet controlled by a flap 2<1> may be used. The flow passes through a divergent passage to a pump 4 and thence to delivery nozzles 6, Figs. 1, 2, these nozzles being provided with means for adjusting the size of the outlet. A rear power plant may be fitted comprising pumps 4a co-operating with a single outlet nozzle 7 which may be rotatable as shown in Fig. 13 by means of a quadrant fitted to a vertical spindle 53. A valve is fitted in the bottom wall of the outlet conduit and comprises deflecting surfaces 39. The valve may be moved downwardly by means of a piston 51 and rod 52 to the position 39<1>, the operating mechanism at the same time effecting the closure of nozzle 7 by means of a damper 41, thus reversing the outlet flow. The valve 7<1>, rod 52 and piston 51 are rotatable for steering, a quadrant on an upper extension of rod 52 meshing with that on spindle 53 for operation by a common hand lever 54. In a modification, two groups of pumps 4, 4a, Figs. 10, are provided, the inlets 1, 1a extending across the bottom and having parallel partitions. The units comprising pumps 4 have bifurcated outlet conduits 6 having nozzles 7, 71 for ahead and reverse drive respectively. The outlet flow is controlled by valves 37, Fig. 14, controlled by a manually actuated hydraulic piston 50. The rear pair of nozzles 7a are rotatably mounted upon conical seatings in their conduits and are rotatable for steering by pulleys 6<1>. Hydraulic control means comprises a piston carrying pulleys 9, 46. Movement of the piston causes opposite movements of the nozzles whilst rotation of pulley 46 causes similar movements.
