Abstract

Addition halogenations are carried out, while substantially inhibiting substitution reactions, by reacting unsaturated hydrocarbons, or mixtures thereof with paraffin or aromatic hydrocarbons, with halogen in the presence of oxygen or gases containing it, e.g. air. Suitable starting materials are olefines, diolefines or terpenes, or mixtures thereof with paraffin or aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene and its homologues, methane and its homologues or aralkyl hydrocarbons. Comparative experiments are given illustrating the effect of oxygen and of air on the chlorination of a mixture of butane and butylene, and of air on the chlorination of butane alone. In an example, a mixture of b -butylene and n-butane is chlorinated in the presence of air, whereby the whole of the butylene is converted to dichlorobutane whilst only a small proportion of the butane is converted into chloride.
