[Class 81 (ii).] A surgical filament for tying arteries and tissues or closing wounds has a preformed loop therein provided with a running slip knot comprising a plurality of convolutions. Various forms of slip knot are illustrated. After tightening around the part to be tied, the knot remainstightand the end of the filament may, if desired, be nipped. According to Fig. 7, a gut filament 6 with loop 7 is formed into a slip knot which slides on a second filament 8. The upper end of the latter is threaded in a needle, the wound sewn, the needle removed and the filament end twisted around the loop 7. By pulling on the lower ends of both filaments, the loop 7 and the loop formed by the filaments 6 and 8 are both contracted. In a modification, Fig. 9, the filament is twisted around a tubular pin 9 through which the end 10 is passed after it has been used to sew a wound. After removing the pin, the slip knot is pulled tight. An instrument for applying the filaments comprises a stem having finger rings 12, 13, 14 and a bored upper portion, preferably inclined at 45‹, ending in a ball 16. The free end of a filament 17 is passed through the bore and the end grasped in the hand or, when the rings 12, 13 are slidable on the part 18 as shown, twisted round these rings. The filament loop is passed over the part to be tied and tightened by pulling the free end, or moving the rings 12, 13 downwardly. The rings may be rigidly connected, or the ring 12 may be pivoted on a pin 21 and the filament clamped between the rings. A spring 20 may be provided for maintaining the rings stationary. In a modification, Fig. 15, the upper part 24 of the instrument is formed with a groove 25 and tapers slightly. The filament is threaded through the tapering bore of the ball 16 and the latter then slipped on to the part 24.
