Abstract

396,540. Apparatus for teaching aviators. AIR SERVICE TRAINING, Ltd., JENKINS, H. F., and BERLYN, R. C., Hamble, near Southampton. June 25, 1932, Nos. 17978, 17979, and 17980. [Class 4.] Apparatus for ground flying instruction comprises an indicating means the pointer of which is connected to an element differentially connected by inextensible means to two controls so that movement of either control moves the pointer without moving the other control. In Fig. 1, a cable 10 passes round a drum on the spindle of a pointer 11 co-operating with the fixed scale of a bank or side-slip indicator. One end of cable 10 is attached to a pulley 13 in a bight of a cable 14 one end of which is movable by the instructor whilst the other end is movable by the pupil respectively through pivoted control members 15, 16. A weight 17 on cable 10 balances equal weights 18, 18 connected to the control members. Means are provided for adjusting the zero of the pointer 11. In modifications tension springs are substituted for the bias weights. In a further modification rigid links articulated to a floating beam to the midpoint of which cable 10 is attached are substituted for pulley 13 and cable 14. The last form may be further modified by omitting the biasing means and rigidly coupling the pointer to the mid-point of the floating beam. Fig. 5 shows a practical arrangement of one of the above described devices wherein pulley 13 is biased by a weight 33 approximately equal to the sum of the two weights 18 and weight 17. A similar arrangement to that shown in Fig. 5 is described as applied to a rudder-bar controlled turn-indicator. Fig. 7 shows a combination of this last device with that of Fig. 5 whereby the instructor is enabled to show on a bank-andturn indicator a turn with side slip or side slip and turn separately. Fore and aft movement of the control levers may, similarly, be arranged to change the reading of a pitch indicator of the type comprising a column of fluid in a tube having a graduated scale. In this case the reservoir of the liquid is the element moved and serves itself or is weighted to form a bias weight. Specification 378,172 is referred to.
