Abstract
396,249. Pistons. HERON, S. D., 227, West 1st Street, Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A. Oct. 27, 1932, No. 30135. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1931. [Class 122 (i).] In a piston having an inner member 16 forming therewith a closed chamber in which a cooling medium 12 is sealed, the gudgeon pin bosses 14 are supported at one end in the skirt and at the other end in the member 16 which also braces the inner ends of the bosses to the head. The member 16 is provided with strengthening webs 17, 19, 24 and is connected at its lower extremity to the skirt by a plate 30 through which the cooling medium is introduced. Oil collected in grooves 37 drains through pipes 38 to the interior of the piston. The various parts of the piston are connected by hydrogen brazing after which the piston is heat treated and the skirt hardened by the nitrogenisation process ; or the skirt may be chromium plated or coated with other suitable bearing material. In a modification, Fig. 7, a forged steel head 68 is connected to a pressed metal skirt 70 and the inner member 65 is connected directly to the skirt ; cooling medium being introduced through a hole 73. The cooling medium employed is a liquid at the working temperature and may comprise metallic sodium, potassium, or lithium or mixtures thereof.
