Abstract

388,561. Preparing fibre for boardmaking stock. ROWELL, C. V., 235, Parramatta Road, Burwood, near Sydney, Australia. Feb. 8, 1932, No. 3731. [Class 96.] New Zealand hemp, sisal hemp, cereal straw, cactacea, megass, mesocarp and endocarp of coconuts, bast of plants and grasses, leaves (piassaba) of palms, agaves, pineapple, &c., are decorticated by being subjected in a compacted condition in a closed chamber 20, to steam gradually raised to 550-900 lbs. per sq. in., the temperature being substantially equalized throughout the mass for 8-50 seconds and the material extruded under steam pressure through one or more constricted orifices, i.e. through openings 25, or through that obtained by removing the plug 22 which is loose in its seating to allow drainage of condensed steam. The steam is admitted at a number of points in the walls of the container 20, which may comprise a steel tube or a cylindrical forging with an upper charging vent &c. 21. The raw material is supplied green or dry and is compressed during or prior to charging. Husks of matured coconuts may be broken down in a hammertype mill &c., and agitated with rakes &c. over a screen or in a trommel to liberate pith, skin, and dust, and the fibre bundled prior to steaming. The extruded fibre is collected in a sump chamber or blown tangentially into an open-ended barrel or into a centrifugal separator. The pectose, gummy, woody and corky materials are separated after steaming &c. by washing with warm or cold water and raking. Fibre from wheat straw &c. may be made into boards by subjecting it whilst damp to 600 lbs. per sq. inch pressure at 250-300‹ F. for about 15 mins. and such boards made into butter boxes. Curled fibre is obtained from cereal straw and may be used for packing eggs, grapefruit, &c.
