Abstract

387,518. Electrotherapeutical apparatus ; making physiological measurements. OPPENHEIM, G., 16, Querstrasse, Frankfort-on-Main, Germany. Feb. 27, 1932, No. 5893. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1931. [Class 81 (ii).] An apparatus for treatment of the body with currents derived from some form of record comprises a record-driving machine 1, a pickup apparatus 3, and treating electrodes 9 specially adapted for applying the modulated current to the body and connected to the pick-up, if desired, through transformer 8. An amplifier 4, rheostat 5, and ammeter 6 are also included in the circuit. Magnetized wires or sound films may be employed, but disc records are preferred. The device may be used in various connections. (1) For electric narcosis, a record is employed furnishing a Leduc current, Fig. 2, the duration of the impulses a being about one-ninth of that of the intervals b. (2) For measuring the chronaxi of a muscle, a record is employed furnishing a current, in which the duration of the impulses p1 .. p4 progressively increases, the intervals t being equal, Fig. 3. Immediately the muscle reacts, the record is stopped. The chronaxi is thus determinable, since the duration of the impulse at this point is known. (3) Unhealthy organs, for example, the heart muscle or the uterus of a woman in child-labour may be subjected to the bioelectrical current of a normal heart or womb of a normal parturient previously recorded cn the disc. (4) Reference is also made to the use of music records, for example, for the treatment of lameness. By means of the switch 10, the composite current, or the alternating current component thereof only, may be used. Inversion of the recorded oscillations may be effected by means of the amplifier.
