379,342. Vacuum switches. INTERNATIONAL GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Inc., 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitõts-Ges.; 2, Friedrich Karl-Ufer, Berlin.) May 27, 1931, No. 15524. Convention date, May 28, 1930. [Class 38 (v).] The massive contacts 2, 3 of a heavy current vacuum switch are freed from occluded gases by the known electronic bombardment method. In order to allow of a high current density in the process, an auxiliary conductor 4 of tungsten of bowed form is mounted around the junction of the main contacts and is supported by auxiliary lead in wires 5, 6. This auxiliary conductor serves as a cathode and the contacts as an anode, a high voltage (for example, 4,000 volts) being applied between the two. A cylindrical shield 8 is arranged between the tungsten band 4 and the walls of the switch and is supported by the lead-in conductors and insulated from one of them. Tubes 10, 12, which are bad conductors of heat, connect the contacts to the outside of the container, the tube 10 to the fixed contact 3 being fixed by seating to the walls and the tube 12 to the movable contact being sealed to the flexible part of the container. These tubes serve as temporary lead-in conductors for the bombardment process ; heavy conductors 11 are inserted in them and screwed to the contacts to carry the normal working current.
