Abstract

Cellulose or cellulosic materials are transformed to conversion products by treatment with volatile acids such as hydrochloric acid in the presence of organic diluents and especially organic diluents which are insoluble or substantially insoluble in water. The primary conversion products are subjected to separate and further hydrolysis after removal of the diluent to produce dextrins &c. Suitable organic diluents include benzol, petroleum ether, ether and methylene chloride. The cellulose may be impregnated with the diluent or with water or dilute hydrochloric acid and then with the diluent and hydrogen chloride is then passed into or through the materials until the desired conversion is attained. The hydrogen chloride may be mixed with vapours of the organic diluents or with an inert gas such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide, or with water vapour. The acid is removed at the end by washing with water or acetone. Specifications 376,323 and 376,372, [Group VI], are referred to.ALSO:Cellulose or cellulosic materials are transformed to conversion products by treatment with volatile acids such as hydrochloric acid in the presence of organic diluents and especially organic diluents which are insoluble or substantially insoluble in water.
