Abstract

A dry and pulverulent fertilizer having a base of ammonium magnesium phosphate is produced by treating natural tricalcium phosphate with a mixture of phosphoric and sulphuric acids to convert the natural phosphate into a mixture of soluble monocalcium phosphate and calcium sulphate, adding triammonium phosphate in a quantity approximately double the quantity of tricalcium phosphate present in the natural phosphate and neutralizing the solution with calcined magnesia. The mixture of sulphuric and phosphoric acids contains substantially 74 per cent of phosphoric acid at substantially 30 DEG B<\>ae and substantially 26 per cent of sulphuric acid at substantially 60 DEG B<\>ae by weight. The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown. The phosphoric and sulphuric acids are added from tanks R<2>, R<1> to a <PICT:0368559/III/1> mixer B to which is also added the natural phosphate from a hopper S. After the reaction the triammonium phosphate is added and the liquid led to a mixer conveyer M where it is mixed with the calcined magnesia from a hopper T.
