Abstract
359,731. Coating with metals. BUNDY TUBING CO., 4815, Bellevue Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Bundy, H. W.; 4815, Bellevue Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Oct. 31, 1930, No. 32726. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1929. [Class 82 (ii).] Metal tubing is formed continuously from flat steel stock 1 with a bonded coating of copper or a copper alloy on one or both sides by passing the stock first through dies or, as shown, through rolls 3 which form the tubular cross-section, whereafter it passes through the heating chamber 6 of a furnace raised to a temperature of 2100‹ F. by electrical elements 5 so that the copper coating is melted, whereby the seam is brazed and the tube is coated continuously with copper either internally, externally or both. The tube then passes through the cooling chamber 14 of a vessel 10 through which cold water is circulated under control so as to prevent chilling of the copper, and finally to a water spray 15 which is also controlled so as to give desired hardness characteristics to the steel. Both the heating and cooling chambers are supplied with a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen through a pipe 17. The tube may be single-ply with a butt or lap joint or with a lock seam. Alternatively, the tube may be two-ply formed from a single sheet rolled through 720‹. The coating may be 0À00075-0À002 ins. thick and may be of pure copper or of a copper base alloy such as silver solder containing silver and a small quantity of zinc. Specification 347,723 is referred to.
