Abstract

355,933. Type-making machines. TELETYPE CORPORATION, 1400, Wrightwood Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. Aug. 16, 1930, No. 24596. Convention date, Sept. 4, 1929. [Class 100 (iii).] Stripperforating machines ; justifying type; keyboards. -A machine for perforating tape for controlling remotely disposed composing machines, particularly of the line-casting type, is provided with counting-mechanism comprising a scale, which indicates the length of the line composed, and also the number of justifying spaces and their minimum and maximum thickness. The depression of the keys releases clutch-mechanism, the rotation of which causes the operation of both the perforating and counting mechanisms. The key-levers, 2, Fig. 3, act on notched permutation bars 6, 61, which are arranged in pairs and rest on rocking- members 7, 7<1> so arranged that, when one bar of a pair is depressed, the other rises, the bars of a pair being differently notched to permit this. The elevated bar 6<1> is returned by the depression of the next key. The rocking-members 7, 7<1> are connected bv bars 11 and levers 14 to links 16, which are thereby selectively interposed between punches 27 and the armature 17 of an operating-electromagnet 18. The key-levers are connected by links 28 to levers 29, which are notched on their undersides, and serve to depress one or other of four bars 31, which control the counting-mechanism. The bars 31 rest on, and operate, rocking-members 32, 321, which transmit motion to bars 33 and levers 35. Three of the bars 31 are connected to escapement pawls 40, Fig. 9, which engage toothed wheels 62, and the fourth bar, which does not actuate the counter, is operated when such keys as " Blank " or " Rub-out " keys are depressed, and serves only to make the circuit of the punchoperating magnet. The three toothed wheels 62 have six, eight, and twelve teeth respectively, and correspond to characters of three different thicknesses. The wheels are loosely mounted on a constantly rotating shaft 53, to which they are connected by friction clutch devices, so that any one of the wheels is rotated a step when its pawl is operated. Associated with each wheel is a toothed cam-disc, which closes contacts 72, 73, in order to complete the circuit of the punch-operating magnet. Each of the toothed wheels 62 is connected bv gearing with a friction clutch device 85 which engages the rim of a drum 89 secured to a shaft 80, so that the shift is rotated to a varying extent according to the thickness of the characters composed. The progress of the composed line is shown on a chart 101, Fig. 4, carried by a drum 100, which is loosely mounted on the shaft 80. The chart bears a number of scales graduated in ems, one scale being visible through a slot 108, Fig. 3, in a cover-plate 109. The chart is surrounded by a helical shutter 102, which rotates with the shaft 80, so as to cover up the scale as the composition proceeds. The edge of the shutter, in conjunction with a black line on the scale, indicates the point that the composition has reached, and the space between the shutter and the end of the scale shows the space remaining to be filled. The chart also bears nine scales, giving provision for nine space-bands in the line, and is rotated a etep, so that a new scale appears in the slot 108, aseach space-band is inserted. The drum bearing the chart is driven from the shaft 53 through a friction clutch device controlled by an escapement, which is operated by the space-key. Each scale has at one end a heavily-shaded portion 105 and a lightly-shaded portion 106, which represent the minimum and maximum thickness of the spacebands respectively, so that the lightly-shaded portion represents the area within which justification is possible. Upper and lower case characters, as required, are composed by means of two shift-keys, which punch a shift-signal in the tape, and alter the position of the bars 29, Fig. 3, so that different bars 31 are operated in accordance with the different space-values of upper and lower-case characters. Depression of an elevator key at the end of the composition of the line produces an elevator signal in the tape, and restores the indicating-chart and shutter in their initial positions. Two sets of spacekeys are provided to enable different values to be given to the spaces.
