Abstract

346,161. Driving machines. HERBERT, SIR A., Dunley Manor, near Whitchurch, Hampshire, and HARRISON, H. T., 44, Melville Road, Coventry. April 4, 1930, No. 10712. [Class 83 (iii).] In change-speed gearing for driving the spindle of a lathe or similar machine tool a belt-driven shaft 4 rotates a driving shaft 2 through gears 3, 5, preferably having a 1À1 ratio. The gears 5, 6 are secured to the shaft 2 and drive gears 7, 8, loose on a shaft 9 and capable of being selectively coupled therewith by friction clutches 10, 11 and a displaceable member 12. The shaft 9 carries easily removable pick-off gears 13, 14 meshing with similar gears 15, 18 secured to two lay shafts 17, 16 which carry gears 19, 20 engaging gears 21, 22 loose on a shaft 23 driving the lathe spindle 41 through a further train 42, 43. The gears 21, 22 may be coupled alternatively to the shaft 23 by friction clutches 24 and a slider 25, but preferably the slower gear 22 drives the shaft through a roller ratchet 26 which may be over-run when the clutch 24 is engaged. Alternatively, the clutches may be on the shafts 17, 16 and the gears 21, 22 secured to the shaft 23. A form of roller ratchet is described in which the gear 28, Fig. 2, is rotatably mounted on the shaft 29 by ball and roller bearings in its hub and is provided with an annular flange 33 having secured thereto blocks 34 located in the space between the flange and the driving member 32 keyed to the shaft. Rollers 38 loose in this space transmit the drive in one direction from cam blocks 36, engaging the flange, to the member 32, spring plungers 40 in the blocks 34 preventing chatter of the rollers during overrunning. The change-speed gears 7, 8, 21, 22 enable four different speeds to be readily obtained with any given pairs of pick-off gears 13 .. 18, and in an example, with the shaft 4 rotating at 600 r.p.m., pick-off gears may be selected to give a range of 8, 16, 200 and 400 r.p.m. of the spindle 41 or with other pick-off gears a range of 33, 65, 32 and 64 r.p.m. The shafts are mounted in ball bearings 44 and the loose gears are also preferably mounted on their shafts by antifriction bearings.
