Abstract
335,179. Gillard, F. W. June 17, 1929. Photometric apparatus. - For the determination and comparison of light intensities, more particularly low intensities, a graduated light filter, or slot, or variable diaphragm is used by which the amount of light falling on a photo-electric cell not only serves as a means of measurement by giving a direct reading in candle-power, but is also so selected in degree and range of intensity that the photo-electric cell is caused to work on that part of its characteristic curve where the greatest change of indication is obtained with the minimum change in illumination. The light 9 to be measured is passed through a graduated filter 11, mounted on graduated rollers 12, on to a photo-electric cell 10 in circuit with an indicating galvanometer 14 as shown. The position of the filter is a measure of the intensity of the light 9. In a modification the cell is connected in the grid circuit of a three electrode valve and the anode current is utilized to serve as an indication. Alternatively the cell or the valve circuit may constitute one arm of a Wheatstone bridge. For the measurement of high intensities additional filters may be fitted in the light path.
