Abstract
332,786. Heide, H. C., (Cincinnati Bickford Tool Co.). Aug. 23, 1929. Drilling-machines.-In a radial-arm drilling and tapping machine the change speed gears for driving the spindle are all located in the drillhead and are arranged on four parallel axes to give a range of thirty-six speeds in steps of three, three and four. A constant speed shaft P mounted on the radial-arm drives a first shaft 1 in one direction or the other through one of a pair of oppositely rotating bevel gears 6. A second shalt 2 is rotated from the shaft 1 through the gear pairs a, c, b, d, or the. clutch b, e and the constantly meshed gears f, g, the gear unit a, b being slidably keyed to the shaft 1 and the clutch gear e, f being freely rotatable thereon whilst all the gears on the shaft 2 are secured thereto. A third shaft 3 has slidably keyed thereon a gear unit 17 and rotatably mounted thereon a gear l having clutch teeth l<1> engageable with clutch teeth j<1> on the unit 17, the drive being transmitted from one of the gears h, c or k on the shaft 2 to one of the gears i, j or l on the shaft 3. A fourth shat 4, coaxial with the shaft 3, has secured thereto a gear q and slidably keyed thereto a gear p which has combined therewith clutch teeth x engageable with teeth w on a gear m slidably keyed to the shaft 3. The drill spindle S is splined within a sleeve 5 on which gears r, n are rotatably mounted, the former having clutch teeth s and the latter extended teeth o which may be engaged alternatively with a clutch element 22, having teeth t and v, slidably keyed on the sleeve 5. The drill spindle may be rotated from the shaft 3 through, (1) the clutch w, x, gears q, r, and clutch s, t, or (2) the gears m,n and clutch v, o, or (3) the gears m, n, gears 0 - - and clutch s, t, or (4) clutch w, x, gears p, o and clutch v, o. Spindles.-The clutch element 22 is splined to the sleeve 5 by means of four keys 28 on the sleeve and corresponding grooves 29, Fig. 2, in the clutch while the sleeve is provided with four keys 30 engaging keyways 31 in the spindle and located at the base of the spindle and within the lower bearing 25 so as to relieve the spindle from torsion as much as possible.
