322,749. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 6, 1928. Mineral and tar oils, extracting.-Oils are extracted from bituminous materials or from the residues obtained in the destructive-hydrogenation of coal or shale, by means of the 80-150‹ C. fraction of the destructive-hydrogenation products of coal, tars, mineral oils, or like carbonaceous materials. Preferably the aromatic content of the solvent is increased, e.g. by treatment with hydrogen at high temperature and pressure, as described in Specifications 281,298 and 302,253, [both in Class 32, Distilling &c.], or by using only that portion soluble in liquid sulphur dioxide. The bituminous materials &c. may first be subjected to low-temperature carbonization, and the solvent may be mixed with alcohols, ketones, oil of turpentine, halogenated hydrocarbons, or other diluents or solvents. In an example, a residue containing 40 per cent solids and obtained by the destructive hydrogenation of lignite is treated in counter curent at 80-100‹ C. with an equal quantity of a product boiling mainly between 80-150‹ C. obtained by treating with a stream of hydrogen under pressure at 600‹ C. an oil obtained by destructively hydrogenating lignite.
