Abstract
321,249. Wagstaff, J. Aug. 17, 1928. Supports for vehicles.-A fluid-pressure-actuated hoist which may be fitted with a platform with tracks for the wheels of a motor vehicle is provided with a combined braking and selfsustaining gear comprising segmental blocks surrounding the ram. The ram 6 carrying the load platform 11 is raised by fluid pressure from a reservoir 9 to which compressed air can be admitted through a pipe 10. A ring 13 surrounds the upper end of the ram and carries a packing ring 14, Fig. 3, with conical recess 19. Segmental brake blocks 23, Fig. 4, fit into the recess and are normally pressed apart by springs 37. The upper parts of the brake blocks are encircled by a brake band 24 connected to an operating lever 30, Fig. 5, the brake band being normally held in the operative position by a spring 28. The brake is released when the glatform is to be raised. If the fluid pressure fails the segments are carried downwards by the ram aud are wedged into the conical recess thus holding the ram against further movement.
