Abstract

304,163. Fitzpatrick, P. Oct. 6, 1927. Odometers. -- Hub-cap odometers for the wheels of motorvehicles have the counting- apparatus mounted on a plate c, Fig. 1, that is screwed to lugs a<2> in the cap and is then secured against access by brazing or otherwise sealing a plate r in position. A central spindle d is lightly pressed outwards by a spring h so that a conical surface d<2> may bear against a rotating ring g, the spindle being held against rotation by means of a weighted arm f, f<1>. As the hub rotates, carrying with it the counting-wheels p on the baseplate b', a lever j, Fig. 3, actuates by means of a pawl l the first wheel m of the train, itself receiving movement from the engagement of a slotted end j<1> with a pin d<3> eccentrically placed on the stationary central spindle. A non-reverse pawl q engages the actuating-wheel, and to take readings a spring- controlled flap n over the opening a<3> is displaced, so that the counting-wheels may be seen through the window o. According to a modification, the counter is inserted from the outer end of the hub into a chamber therein, which is sealed by a cover over the insertion aperture. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 60/83 and 8346/85.
