Abstract
295,516. Oldham & Son, Ltd., and Wilde, W. D. Sept. 1, 1927. Cells; electrodes; gas exits.-A galvanic battery provided with an exit for escape of gas but preventing escape of liquid is divided into two compartments a, e by a partition f extending from the bottom of the cell nearly to the undersurface of the cover g, the compartment intercommunicating through the space over the top edge of the partition. Compartment a contains the plates c or other active elements, and compartment e may hold the acid until it is required to bring the battery into use. A tube n provided with perforations o is fitted transversely across compartment e as shown and a short, open-ended tube p, extending into tube n and having its outer end communicating with the atmosphere, is fitted in the outer wall r of the cell. In a modification, Fig. 5, the partition extends completely up to the cover, and is provided with apertures near its upper end fitted with tubes y extending into the compartment a as shown. Plugs or other closures w fitted in the apertures confine the acid to compartment e until it is required to bring the battery into use, when the closures can be removed or punctured, access to the closures being had through filling holes in the cover normally closed by stoppers s. The material of the plates between the usual terminal lugs k extends up to near the undersurface of the cover g to utilize all available space, and the plates rest on pieces u to provide a space d to catch sediment.
