Abstract

281,942. Jacobsen, R. S. May 17, 1927. Variable-speed gearing comprises planetary friction rollers 30 engaging pairs of inner and outer races 12, 13 and 23, 24, respectively. The races 12, 13, which are pressed into engagement by springs 16, 17 constitute the driving-element of the variable train. The rollers 30 are pivotally supported by arms 31 upon a spider 33 fast on a driven shaft 18. the speed of which is variably reduced, as the races 23, 24 do not turn. The speed is varied by axial displacement of one of the outer races. By turning a control handwheel 27 with a screwed boss 4, a sleeve 21 carrying the race 24 is moved axially, a non-rotary sliding connection being provided at 26. The rollers 30 are double-conical with concave friction surfaces. The races are convex. In the arrangement shown, the inner races 12, 13 are splined upon a sleeve 14 driven at a constant reduced speed from a driving-shaft 5 through a planetary toothed train 9, 10, 11.
