Abstract

276,374. Schieferstein, G. H. Aug. 22, 1927. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 21, 1927]. Testing rails forming part of permanent way.- A method of testing the condition of railway tracks consists in imparting mechanical oscillations of high frequency and low amplitude to the line at certain points and receiving the transmitted oscillations at any convenient point by telephone relays &c., the presence of defective parts being indicated by the diminution in intensity of the vibrations received. The rail section 1 is connected to a similar section by a fish plate 2 and has secured to it a mass 3 to which oscillations are imparted through an elastic member 4 and a mass 5 by a generator 6. The latter comprises rotary unbalanced members 6 which are rotated according to the periodicity of the oscillatory system 4, 5 by means of a motor 14 through a transmission gear 11, 12, 13 and elastic member 8. In a modification the end of the member 4 is given a series of blows from movable levers projecting from a rotary disc. In a further modification the mass 3 is connected to one end of a tube the other end of which is connected to the outer end of a surrounding tube which carries on the inner end next the mass 3 a second mass and exciting magnet. The receiver comprises a microphone 16 attached to the line of rail by a bracket 15 and loaded with a mass 17. The microphone is connected by conductors 18 to a receiver 20. When a train is travelling on a section, the vibrations due to the train are superimposed on the other vibrations and the position of the train may be judged accordingly.
