Abstract
275,666. Eckerlin, K., and Enzensberger, M. A. Aug. 7,1926, [Convention date]. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Handcuffs.-The bases a, a<1> of a pair of pivoted jaws b, b<1> of a handcuff are formed with interengaging teeth c and the teeth of one jaw b' also engage a spring-pressed operating rack h by which the jaws are opened. The jaws are held closed by the spring-pressed wedge k which engages the base of the jaw b. The handcuff is shown in the operative position in Fig. 2. The casing carries a handle g. Release is effected by a pin p which passes up the hollow member h and first pushes the wedge k away from the base of the jaw b against the action of the spring l by means of its end and then pushes the rack member h inwards against the action of the spring n by means of its head p<1>, causing the jaws to open. The jaws close automatically under the action of the springs l, n, when the pin p is removed. If the jaws are applied initially to a part, such as the forearm, which is too thick to permit of complete closing, any opening tendency is prevented by the spring- pressed wedgs, but any closing tendecy of the jaws, such as by the jaws slipping down towards the wrist, is permitted.
