Delivery of articles stored in piles; coin action, mechanical-connection.-In a coin-freed vending machine of the type in which a number of delivery drawers are controlled from a single coin shoot so that one drawer may be selected for operation while the others are held locked, and as shown in a machine having two series of drawers with associated coin shoots and locking mechanism, each drawer 8 of a series has a cam slot 14 which co-operates with a pin 31 on a transverse sliding rod 20 common to all the drawers of the series and normally prevented from more than a slight movement by the end of a lever 33 obstructing a shoulder 32 on the rod. When a coin drops from the shoot into a housing 23 and the selected drawer is pulled the first movement of the rod 20 causes its end 20<a >to thrust the coin against a lever 36 projecting into the housing, the lever being pivoted at 37 and provided with a hump 38. When the lever 36 is moved, its hump 38 presses back the detent 33 against the action of a spring 35 and allows the drawer 8 to be drawn out fully. The coin drops through a slot in the base plate but the detent 33 is held in releasing position by a bevelled proiection 42 on the rod 20 until the drawer is returned, when a spring 27 connected to the rod through a pivoted arm 26 returns the rod to its initial position.. The drawers slide in guideways 6 and each has a long projection to co-operate with a latch 17 sliding transversely through the guideway between two drawers, the ends 19 of the latch being bevelled. When one drawer is pulled, its projection 16 moves the latch which holds the other drawer locked. It is also additionally locked by the corresponding pin 31 on the rod 20 entering a lateral extension 15 of its cam slot 14. When there are more than two drawers in a series, sliding latches of various lengths are arranged between each two drawers. The stops 42 may carry bracket,s connected by chains to the coin shoots to give a shaking action and prevent coins from sticking.
