Abstract

273,496. Calvert, G. W. July 9, 1926. Screw propellers.-A helicopter is provided with elevating propellers driven normally by one or more engines, but adapted to. be driven in the event of failure of the engines by means actuated by air pressure. The elevating propellers 16, constructed with upturned blades, are mounted on vertical spindles 19 driven through change-speed gearing 22, 24 from the main drive spindle 26 disposed axially of the machine. A collapsable fan-like propeller 78, 79 is also provided on a vertical spindle 66 and is adapted to drive the shaft 26 and hence the elevating propellers through bevel gearing 71, 72 which is normally disengaged. This auxiliary driving propeller is mounted with its lower portion on the tabular shaft 66 while its upper end is secured to a spindle 65 which is capable of limited longitudinal movement bv screw and nut gear 65<1>, 66', Fig. 8, to expand the fan propeller on the gears 71 and 72 being engaged. The propelling propellers 39 are also driven through variable-speed gearing from the main shaft 26.
