Abstract

A smart dosing device includes: a flow pathway comprising a cartridge receptacle that is able to house a cartridge; at least one sensor that captures identifying information related to the cartridge; a wireless communication module; and at least one security feature that restricts use of the smart dosing device. A method of providing a measured dose using a smart dosing device includes: enabling dosing; measuring a provided dose; and disabling dosing. A smart dosing system includes: a smart dosing device having a unique identifier, the smart dosing device including a cartridge housing a substance, the cartridge having a unique cartridge identifier; and a server including a central database that stores usage information related to the smart dosing device, the usage information comprising: the unique identifier and the unique cartridge identifier.

Claims (20)

  1. CLAIMS We claim: 1. A smart dosing device comprising: a supply pathway comprising a cartridge receptacle that is able to house a cartridge; at least one sensor that captures identifying information related to the cartridge; a wireless communication module; and at least one security feature that restricts use of the smart dosing device.
  2. 2. The smart dosing device of claim 1, wherein the supply pathway further comprises a measurement element that detects an amount of a substance provided by the smart dosing device.
  3. 3. The smart dosing device of claim 2 further comprising a storage that collects usage information related to the smart dosing device.
  4. 4. The smart dosing device of claim 3, wherein the usage information comprises at least one of a quantity measured by the measurement element, identifying information related to the cartridge, a number of doses administered, or a timestamp associated with each administered dose.
  5. 5. The smart dosing device of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensor comprises a camera and the identifying information comprises a graphic code.
  6. 6. The smart dosing device of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensor comprises a near field communication (NFC) receiver and the identifying information comprises an NFC tag.
  7. 7. The smart dosing device of claim 1, wherein the cartridge comprises a substance associated with a prescription, the prescription comprising at least one of a specified dose amount, dose frequency, maximum dose, maximum dose over time, and total usage period.
  8. 8. The smart dosing device of claim 1, wherein a metered dose is provided based on an amount determined by a measurement element located along the supply pathway.
  9. 9. The smart dosing device of claim 1, wherein the security feature compares at least one of a captured fingerprint and facial photo to a reference file, wherein no substance is dispensed from the smart dosing device unless the reference file matches at least one of the captured fingerprint or facial photo
  10. 10. The smart dosing device of claim 1, wherein the cartridge comprises a storage cavity that houses a substance comprising at least one of an opioid, cannabinoid, and nicotine-based substance
  11. 11. The smart dosing device of claim 1, wherein the wireless communication channel communicatively couples the smart dosing device to an external device, the external device comprising at least one of a smartphone, tablet, personal computer, server, and storage
  12. 12. A method of providing a measured dose using a smart dosing device, the method comprising: enabling dosing; measuring a provided dose; and disabling dosing
  13. 13. The method of claim 12, wherein enabling dosing comprises: activating an atomizer; and activating a flow meter
  14. 14. The method of claim 12, wherein enabling dosing comprises: opening a latch; extracting a measured portion of a substance; and providing the measured portion through an outlet port
  15. 15. The method of claim 12, wherein enabling dosing comprises: activating an actuator; and providing at least one of a tablet, capsule, or pill through an outlet port .
  16. 16. The method of claim 12 wherein enabling dosing comprises authenticating a user and wherein dosing is not enabled if the user is not successfully authenticated.
  17. 17. The method of claim 16, wherein authenticating a user comprises capturing at least one of a fingerprint scan and a facial photograph and comparing the captured information to a reference file
  18. 18. The method of claim 12, wherein the smart dosing device dispenses a substance comprising at least one of an opioid, cannabinoid, and nicotine-based solution
  19. 19. A smart dosing system comprising: a smart dosing device having a unique identifier, the smart dosing device comprising a cartridge housing a substance, the cartridge having a unique cartridge identifier; and a server including a central database that stores usage information related to the smart dosing device, the usage information comprising: the unique identifier and the unique cartridge identifier .
  20. 20. The smart dosing system of claim 19, wherein the usage information further comprises: an identity of a prescribing practitioner; an identity of a dispenser of the substance; an identity of a user of the smart dosing device; and an identity of a manufacturer of the substance, the smart dosing device, or the cartridge.
