Abstract

A waterborne vessel such as a ship, boat, yacht or similar is flexibly secured or tethered to a drift buoy sensor unit by means of a rope, cable or similar. The drift buoy sensor unit measures tidal drift speed and direction by means of a satellite positioning system. Data is sent to an onboard processing and display device where tidal vector information assists the helm navigate in real time.

Description

Description
Marine current speed and direction measuring instrument for use on vessels.
This invention relates to a system of measuring tide current speed and direction.
This invention relates to a device for assisting a vessel's helm in navigation and/or planning by providing the speed and direction of local tidal current in real time.
When vessels are navigating, they may have vessel speed over the ground obtained by satellite position system information and they may also have speed through the water obtained from hull sensor data (paddle wheel and/or ultrasonic). Hull speed in the water is often only obtained in the major axis of the craft and any lateral speed is not easily sensed.
When tide current is in the major axis of the vessel, a simple vector addition is possible, however with off axis tide current the vector addition is more complex and not often done in real time.
This invention provided the speed and direction of the tide current in all possible directions and presents this information to the vessel helm in real time.
This marine tidal current speed and direction instrument for a moving or moored vessel comprises a flexibly secured drift buoy sensor unit where the buoy tidal drift speed and direction is measured by satellite position system information and data is sent to an on board vessel linked processing and display unit where the tidal speed vector information speed and direction is provided to assist the helm navigate or plan in real time.
A sensor system based on a float buoy with vanes and electronics flexibly attached to a vessel.
This buoy for periods of time is solely influenced by tide current and during this time the buoy movement speed and direction are obtained from satellite position system information and this information including buoy speed and direction are transmitted to the vessel. This information is provided/displayed in real time on the vessel enabling the helm to make informed decisions influencing vessel course and speed.
