A TROLLEY FOR TRANSPORTING A GAS CYLINDER
This invention relates to a trolley and, more especially, this invention relates to a trolley for transporting a gas cylinder.
Trolleys for transporting gas cylinders are known. Some of the known trolleys are awkward to use. Also, some of the known trolleys are of complicated designs, which unnecessarily increases manufacturing costs.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a trolley for transporting a gas cylinder, which trolley comprises;
(i) a frame portion;
(ii) a base portion which in use extends outwardly from the frame portion, and which is for receiving the gas cylinder;
(iii) a cap portion which in use extends outwardly from the frame portion, and which is for fitting on top of the gas cylinder when the gas cylinder is on the base portion; and (iv) locking means which locks the cap portion to the top of the gas cylinder and thereby secures the gas cylinder in position between the Cap portion and the base portion.
The trolley of the present invention is easy to use because the locking means operates to lock the Cap portion to the top of the gas cylinder. Thus the locking means is at a convenient height for operation. There is no need for a person securing the gas cylinder to the trolley to have to bend to awkward positions such for example as would be the case if the locking means were to be located near the base portion of the trolley. Also, the trolley is able to be of a simple design, which helps to minimise manufacturing costs.
The trolley of the present invention may be for transporting various gas cylinders for various uses, with the gas inside the gas cylinder being appropriate for the intended use. Thus, for example, the gas cylinder may be one which contains natural gas or propane gas for use for heating and cooking purposes. Such types of gas cylinders are used domestically where a piped gas supply is not available, for example in caravans and mobile out-door eating establishments. The gas cylinder may alternatively be a gas cylinder for use by divers.
The gas cylinder may be one in which the base portion is pivotally mounted to the frame portion, whereby the base portion is pivotable between a use position in which the base portion extends outwardly from the frame portion, and a non-use position in which the base portion extends parallel to the frame portion. In the use position, the base portion is ready for receiving the gas cylinder. In the non-use position, the base portion is ready for facilitating transportation and/or storage of the trolley when the trolley is not in use.
In alternative embodiments of the invention, the base portion may be moveably mounted to the frame portion other than by a pivotal mounting arrangement. Alternatively, the base portion may be fixed in position with respect to the frame portion.
The trolley may be one in which the cap portion is pivotally mounted to the frame portion, whereby the cap portion is pivotable between a use position in which the cap portion fits on top of the gas cylinder, and a non-use position in which the cap portion extends parallel to the base portion. In the use position, the cap portion is able to fit to the top of the gas cylinder and hold it in position on the trolley. In the non-use position, the cap portion is in a position which facilitates the transportation and/or storage of the trolley.
In alternative embodiments of the invention, the cap portion may be moveably mounted to the frame portion other than by a pivotal arrangement. Thus, for example, the cap portion may slide up and down the frame portion.
Preferably, the locking means is a clip locking means which clips to the top of the gas cylinder. Other types of locking means may be employed.
Advantageously, the trolley is one in which the cap portion is configured to prevent access to a gas valve in the top of the gas cylinder. Prevention of access to the gas valve may help to stop the gas valve inadvertently being depressed during transportation. This in turn helps to avoid gas leakage, with the possibility of a gas explosion. The cap portion may be a flat cap portion. Other shapes for the cap portion may be employed.
Advantageously, the trolley is one in which the frame portion has a rear surface with is plain and which is for sliding over a part of a vehicle as the trolley is placed in or removed from the vehicle. This facility may be especially useful for persons who have difficulty in lifting the trolley into and out of their vehicle. Such persons may be persons with back ailments, or persons who are simply not strong enough easily to lift the trolley in and out of the vehicle. In this case, the persons are able to slide the trolley over a part of the vehicle, for example an edge of a boot of the vehicle. The vehicle may be a car, van or other vehicle normally used by the persons.
The trolley may include a first handle formation on the base portion, and a second handle formation on the cap portion. The first and second handle formations enable the trolley easily to be lifted. The first and second handle formations may be closed-loop first and second handle formations. Other designs for the first and second handle formations may be employed.
The trolley may be one in which the frame portion comprises a top member, and in which the top member has a recess for forming a finger hold when the trolley is lying flat and needs to be moved, for example when the trolley is lying flat in the boot of a vehicle.
The trolley may be one in which the top member is a bar, in which the frame portion also comprises a pair of side bars, and in which the bar forming the top member extends between the side bars. Other constructions may be employed.
In all embodiments of the invention, the frame portion may be a heightadjustable frame portion Which is adjustable in height to suit the height of the user. The height-adjustable frame portion may be adjustable by being telescopic. Other formations, for example sliding constructions, may be employed for enabling the frame portion to be height-adjustable. Alternatively, if desired, the frame portion may be a fixed height frame portion.
When the frame portion is height-adjustable, then the trolley may include securing means for securing the height-adjustable frame portion at a chosen height.
The securing means may include a release member. The release member may be a button. The release member, for example the button, may form part of securing means which is spring biased to a locking position. Other types of release member may be employed.
The trolley may be one in which the frame portion includes movementresisting parts for resisting movement of the trolley when it is being transported in a vehicle. The movement-resisting parts may be a pair of spaced apart areas at a top part of a face of the frame portion. The spaced apart areas may simply be parts of the frame portion, for example parts of a top member of the frame portion. Alternatively, the spaced apart areas may be formed by added material. The spaced apart areas are typically chosen such that they are helpful in resisting movement of the trolley when it is in a vehicle, and they are also such that they do not damage the surface of the vehicle on which they are resting.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a trolley of the present invention;
Figure 2 is an opposite side view of the trolley as shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a front view of the trolley as shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a rear view of the trolley as shown in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a view like Figure 1 but shows parts of the trolley in section;
Figure 6 is a view like Figure 3 but shows parts of the trolley in section;
Figure 7 illustrates how parts of the trolley shown in Figure 1 fold for transportation and/or storage;
Figure 8 is a view like Figure 7 but shows parts in section to illustrate the folding action; and
Figure 9 is an enlarged top view of the trolley shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a trolley 2 for transporting a gas cylinder 4. The trolley comprise a frame portion 6, a base portion 8, and a cap portion 10. The base portion 8 extends outwardly from the frame portion 6 in use of the trolley 2. The base portion 8 is for receiving the gas cylinder 4. The cap portion 10 extends outwardly from the frame portion 6 in use of the trolley 2. The cap portion 10 is for fitting on top of the gas cylinder 4 when the gas cylinder 4 is on the base portion 8.
The trolley 2 also comprises locking means 12. The locking means 12 locks the cap portion 10 to the top of the gas cylinder 4, and thereby secures the gas cylinder 4 in position between the cap portion 10 and the base portion
8.
As Can be appreciated from a comparison of Figures 1 and 7, the base portion 8 is pivotally mounted to the frame portion 6. More specifically, the base portion 8 is pivotable between a use position in which the base portion 8 extends outwardly from the frame portion 6, and a non-use position in Which the base portion 8 extends parallel to the frame portion 6. The use-position is shown in Figure 1. The non-use position is shown in Figure 7. The use-position shown in Figure 1 enables the trolley 2 to receive the gas cylinder 4. The trolley can then be manually wheeled by wheels 14 to a position where the gas cylinder 4 is to be used, for example in a caravan or a mobile eating establishment which are without a mains gas supply. The non-use position is shown in Figure 7. In the non-use position, the gas cylinder 4 is not present, and the base portion 8 is pivotable so that the base portion 8 lies parallel with and adjacent to the frame portion 6. This position facilitates transportation and/or storage of the trolley 2 when it is not in use. Figure 8 is a view like Figure 7 but shows parts of the trolley 2 in cross section in order to illustrate the operation of the parts.
From a comparison of Figures 1 and 7, it will also be appreciated that the cap portion 10 is pivotally mounted to the frame portion 6. The pivotable mounting is such that the cap portion 10 is pivotable between a use position in which the cap portion 10 fits on top of the gas cylinder 4, and a non-use position in which the cap portion 10 extends parallel to the base portion 8. Figure 1 shows the use-position of the cap portion 10 in which it is securing the gas cylinder 4 on the trolley 2 Figure 7 shows that in the non-use position, the cap portion 10 extends parallel or substantially parallel to the base portion 8. This folded non-use position facilitates transportation and storage of the trolley 2.
Figures 5 and 6 best illustrate how the locking means 12 is a clip locking means which clips to the top of the gas cylinder 4. More specifically, the top of the gas cylinder 4 has a rim 16 and the cap portion 10 has a downwardly depending circular wall 18. The circular wall 18 clips to the rim 16.
Figure 9 is a top view of the trolley 2 and the gas cylinder 4. A gas valve 20 in the top of the gas cylinder 4 is shown in broken lines in Figure 9. It will be appreciated from Figure 1 and 9 that when the cap portion 10 is in its use position, then the cap portion 10 prevents access to the gas valve 20 in the top of the gas cylinder 4. The cap portion 10 is shown configured as a flat cap portion 10.
The frame portion 6 has a rear surface 22 which is plain and which is for sliding over a part of a vehicle (not shown) as the trolley 2 is placed in or removed from the vehicle. The trolley 2 may be, for example, placed in or removed from a boot of the vehicle. If the trolley 2 and the gas cylinder 4 should be relatively heavy for a person handling the trolley 2 and the gas cylinder 4, then the person may wish to slide the trolley 2 into the vehicle, for example into the boot of the vehicle. In this case, the plain rear surface 22 is able to slide over various parts of the vehicle, for example a boot lip of the vehicle, without damaging the parts of the vehicle.
The trolley 2 includes a first handle formation 24, and the first handle formation 24 is on the base portion 8. The trolley 2 also includes a second handle formation 26, and the second handle formation 26 is on the cap portion 10. The first and second handle formations 24,26 are for use in lifting the trolley
2. The trolley 2 may thus easily be lifted into an out of vehicles, for example into and out of the boots of cars, or into and out of the back of vans.
Figure 9 illustrates how the frame portion 6 comprises a top member 28. The top member 28 has a recess 30. The recess 30 forms a finger hold when the trolley 2 is lying flat and needs to be moved. The recess 30 may be especially advantageous if the trolley 2 is lying flat in the boot of a car, and a person is having to stretch into the boot of the car in order to grasp the trolley 2.
The top member 28 is in the form of a bar. As shown in Figure 3, the frame portion 6 also comprises a pair of side bars 32, 34. The bar forming the top member 28 extends between the side bars 32, 34.
Figures 1 and 7 illustrate how the frame portion 6 is a height-adjustable frame portion 6 which is adjustable in height to suit the height of a user. Figure 1 shows the frame portion 6 at a required use height. Figure 7 shows the frame portion 6 in a non-use collapsed position. Figure 8 best illustrates how the height-adjustable frame portion 6 is telescopic.
Figures 3 and 6 illustrate how the trolley 2 includes securing means 36 for securing the frame portion 6 at a chosen height. The securing means 36 includes a button 38. The button 38 is spring biased to a locking position in which the securing means 36 operates to secure the frame portion 6 at the required height. When the button 38 is depressed, the securing means 38 becomes inoperative and the frame portion 6 may be increased in height, or collapsed to the storage position shown in Figures 7 and 8.
Figure 4 illustrates how the frame portion 6 includes movement-resisting parts 40, 42 for resisting movement of the trolley 2 when the trolley 2 is being transported in a vehicle. The movement-resisting parts 40, 42 are a pair of spaced apart areas at a top part of a face 44 of the frame portion 6.
Figure 4 also illustrates how the frame portion 6 is able to be height adjustable by being telescopic. More specifically, the frame portion 6 comprises an inner part 46 which slides in an outer part 48. When the inner part 46 has been sufficiently pulled out of the outer part 48, then the inner and outer parts 46, 48 are able to be secured together by inserting locking pins (not shown) in a chosen one of a plurality of holes 50 which are in the inner and outer parts 46, 48, and which are able to receive the pins when they are in registry. As shown in Figure 4, these are two lines of the holes 50, one in each of the two sides of the frame portion 6.
The trolley 2 is easy to use. The locking means 12 is at a convenient height because it locks to the top of the gas cylinder 4. The locking means 12 is also easy to use because it is a simple clip locking means 12 Which clips to the rim 16 at the top of the gas cylinder 4. The locking means 12 pivots about a pivot 52 which is in the frame portion 6. The pivot 52 is shown in Figures 5 and 8. These Figures 5 and 8 also show a pivot 54. The pivot 54 may be a multi-purpose pivot 54, i.e. for supporting the wheels 14 and also for enabling the base portion 8 to pivot to the non-use position. Alternatively, a separate pivot for the base portion 8 may be provided.
Figures 1,2 and 5 best illustrate how the cap portion 10 has an outwardly extending flange 56. This flange 56 forms a gripping portion for enabling the cap portion 10 easily to be pulled upwardly and pivoted away from the gas cylinder 4 when it is desired to remove the gas cylinder 4 from the trolley 2. Figures 1, 2, 5 and 9 also best illustrate how the cap portion 10 is mounted on a pair of arms 58 which extend from the frame portion 6.
The trolley 2 is easily adjusted to a required height using the holes 50 and the locking pins. The securing means 36 is easily operated to adjust the height, with the operation simply requiring depression of the button 38. The trolley 2 is easily lifted by means of the first and second handle formations 24,
26. The trolley 2 is able to be manufactured at a commercial price because it is not of a complicated design. The trolley 2 may be made in a wide variety of materials including aluminium which is light and non-rusting, plastic coated steel, and tough rigid plasties materials.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, locking means 12 other than the illustrated clip locking means may be employed. The cap portion 10 may be of other shapes whilst still preventing access to the gas valve 20 in the top of the gas cylinder 4. The frame portion 6 may be height adjustable by means other than the illustrated telescopic means. Other types of securing means 36 may be employed for securing the frame portion at a desired height. The gas cylinder 4 may be any known type of gas Cylinder, and of various shapes and sizes. The gas cylinder will contain a gas appropriate for the intended use of the gas cylinder. Other constructions of gripping portion 56 may be employed for facilitating the unclipping of the locking means 12 and the upward pivoting of the cap portion 10 about the frame portion 6. Individual components shown in the drawings are not limited to use in their drawings and they may be used in other drawings and in all aspects of the invention.
